The 2009 Bank of America Charitable Foundation Neighborhood Excellence Initiative is accepting applications for 2009 awards. Through this innovative program, qualified organizations may apply for $200,000 in unrestricted general operating support to further their community building work as well as leadership development for their executives. Deadline is June 30.

Since 2004, the Neighborhood Excellence Initiative has provided more than $90 million to nonprofit organizations to help improve communities across the country. The Neighborhood Excellence Initiative offers organizations a unique opportunity by combining leadership development with general operating support to organizations addressing the most pressing needs of our communities across the country.

The Neighborhood Excellence Initiative recognizes and rewards individuals and organizations who are making a difference in our communities, and is divided into three categories of recipients:

 Neighborhood Builders® – Provides $200,000 in grant funding and leadership training over two years to two community non-profit organizations working to promote vibrant neighborhoods.
 Local Heroes™ – Recognizes and honors five community leaders each year; recipients are able to direct a $5,000 charitable contribution to an eligible non-profit of their choice.
 Student Leaders® – Recognizes five high school junior or senior students as exemplary young people with a passion to improve their neighborhoods. Each student participates in an eight-week paid summer internship with a community-based organization, as well as an all-expense paid week-long Student Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C.
