LOS ANGELES, Ca – April 29, 2008. The 3rd Annual FedEx Asian Friendship Golf Tournament, presented by Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Los Angeles and Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Los Angeles, will be held on May 30, 2008, at Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Palms in the City of Industry. The two courses (Babe – short and narrow) and (Ike – long and wide) are now inviting amateur players, from singles to foursomes, to the challenge. Winning prizes include 2 Business Class round-trip tickets to Hong Kong, courtesy of Cathay Pacific Airways, and much more.
The first annual Asian Friendship Golf Tournament, was organized by Korean American Chamber of Commerce of Los Angeles in 2006, for the purpose of fostering a closer relationship amongst all the Asian community leaders in the greater Los Angeles area. The torch was subsequently passed onto Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Southern California in 2007. In both years, the event was a big success for golfers whose heritage came from China, Japan, Korea, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Thailand. “This year, we have invited 12 Asian countries such as Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, People’s Republic of China, Philippine, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, hoping that we can get more ethnicities involved, and create a bigger unified group to celebrate the spirit of the Olympics,” said K.T. Leung, Chairman of the Tournament.
With the advent of the Beijing Olympics, and under the auspices of Consul General Zhang of Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Los Angeles, the Tournament committee received extra support in bringing Asian community leaders together to strength the bond, and to be able to identify and discuss issues that Asian Americans face. On April 29, 2008, Consul General Zhang will be hosting a kick-off dinner at his residence for the Tournament, from 6:00p.m. to 8:00p.m. Ambassadors of the Chinese, Filipino, Indian, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Pakistanis, Singaporean, Thai and Vietnamese communities will be attending the event. “The kick-off dinner provides an excellent forum for Asian Americans, as a group, to voice their needs, and ways to realize the solutions to those needs,” added Chester Chong, President of Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Los Angeles.
Outside of the Asian communities, the 3rd Annual FedEx Asian American Golf Tournament received generous contribution from mainstream sponsors (partial list at press time): FedEx, American International Cultural Exchange Foundation, Cathay Bank, Cathay Pacific Airways, Chinatown Business Improvement District, Commerce Casino, Community Redevelopment Agency (City of Los Angeles), Councilman Ed Reyes – Council District 1, Empress Pavilion Restaurant, Face & Body Laser Skin Clinic, Far East American, Harrah’s Rincon Casino & Resort, Hong Kong Shanghai Bank – HSBC, JcPenney, KNBC, Korean Wave/Korean Sparkling Pavilion, LA 18, LA County Park & Recreation Department, Lee Kum Kee, Macy’s, Omega Boutique at Rodeo Drive, Pacific Alliance Medical Center, Rose Hills Memorial Park & Mortuary, Royal Jewelry, Rusnak Automative Group, Sing Tao Newspapers, Southern California Edison, Southwest Airlines, Sunrider International, The Chinese CEO Organization/E-Tech Securities, United Commercial Bank, Verizon Wireless, WalMart, WCETV, and Westin Bonaventure Hotel & Suites.
